The South Zealand & Møn Route

Stage 1 Næstved to Stege, 75 km

From Næstved, follow National Route 8 south and cycle past the beautiful Gavnø Castle, where you can enjoy the newly renovated rooms at the castle, the Nordic region’s largest private painting collection, the impressive castle park and much more. On the trip south towards Vordingborg, you will have a view of Dybsø and Avnø Fjord. On the way, you’ll pass the nature areas Avnø and Knudshoved Odde, where there is abundant birdlife and you might spot a seal if you’re lucky. In Vordingborg, you’ll pass by the Goose Tower and the Danish Castle Centre, where you can learn more about the three Valdemar kings who ruled there in Vordingborg’s heyday.

From Kalvehave you can choose to take the sailing cycle route across Stege bay, where you’ll save approx. 11 km by bike. The ferry runs every weekend during the schools’ summer holidays from week 26 to week 32.

Stage 2 Stege to Møns Klint, 65 km

This stage begins in one of Denmark’s oldest market towns, Stege, which is brimming with activities and cosy cafés throughout the summer. The stage takes you around Møn, where you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience the unique local life. Follow Regional Route 58 around West Møn, which is known for its many galleries, artisans and farm shops, where you can fill your bike baskets with exciting goodies. Heading from west to east you’ll pass Fanefjord Church, which is known for its frescoes. Follow National Route 8 towards the natural phenomenon that is Møns Klint. Enjoy the view from the top of the cliff or walk down to the beach and experience the 128-metre-high chalk-white cliffs that rise above the turquoise waters of the sea. Visit GeoCenter Møns Klint – an experience centre where you can learn more about Denmark’s birth, dinosaur excavations and much more.

Stage 3 Møns Klint to Stege, 46 km

In the morning, you can get one last look at Møns Klint, perhaps from the beautiful Liselund Castle Park. The route then takes you towards Nyord, a small car-free island, which is connected to Møn by a bridge. Nyord is a small community full of foodie experiences, artists and local enthusiasts. From Nyord you head back to Stege, which awaits your return with cafés, restaurants and local shops. At Møn Museum you can hear about life on Møn, while at Thorsvang Collector’s Museum you can explore “the old days” in the museum’s unique collection.

Stage 4 Stege to Rødvig, 61 km

You could start the day with the sailing cycle path, Færgen Møn, which sails every weekend during the school summer holidays from week 26 to week 32. The trip takes approx. 50 minutes and you save approx. 11 km by bike. From Kalvehave you cycle north on National Route 9, which brings you all the way along the east coast of Zealand to the charming port town of Rødvig and the Stevns Klint UNESCO World Heritage site. On the way you’ll pass the charming market town of Præstø, where you can enjoy lunch and a cold beer in the harbour with a stunning view of Præstø Fjord. The stage offers several options for detours, including the Jungshoved area on Panorama Route 424 or going inland to Faxe Limestone Quarry and Geomuseum Faxe on Panorama Route 425.

Stage 5 Rødvig to Gisselfeld, 53 km

The stage runs along the UNESCO World Heritage Stevns Klint, which offers a wealth of scenic experiences. Enjoy a dip on the beach in the harbour town of Rødvig, and make a stop at Boesdal Limestone Quarry or at the Stevnsfort Cold War Museum, which is home to Denmark’s biggest war secret. An ideal place for your lunch break can be found at Højerup Old Church, which is located on top of the 30-metre-tall cliff, where you can get insight into the designation of Stevns Klint as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the northern part of Stevns, cross from National Route 9 to Regional Route 56 and then go along the road towards Haslev and Gisselfeld.  

Stage 6 Gisselfeld to Næstved, 36 km

The last stage takes you through Gisselfeld’s forests, where you will find Gisselfeld Abbey and the Paradehuset orangery. The idyllic area takes you to Camp Adventure where you can come up above the treetops in the 45-metre-tall Forest Tower and enjoy the view over the whole of South Zealand. The trip continues towards Holmegård Værk – an experience centre featuring glass and ceramic exhibitions from the Danish design brands Holmegaard and Kähler. The stage ends in Næstved, where you can take an extra trip to see Næstved Streetart, a project decorating the town’s hidden and forgotten gables. Finish with a visit to one of the local speciality shops or enjoy a well-deserved end to the day at one of Næstved’s many restaurants or cafés.
