Microbreweries and wineries on South Zealand & Møn

Encountering vineyards and wineries in the Danish countryside is probably surprising to most. On South Zealand there are two wineries with commercial production, where you can both go on a tour and buy the precious drops. And on the tiny island of Nyord, north of Møn, you can even buy locally produced, sustainable gin, if you are looking for a true connoisseur offer.

If you’re among the many people who have acquired a taste for the smaller breweries’ products, then combine a trip to South Zealand & Møn with a tour of some of the region’s microbreweries. Start, for example, with a visit to Gavnø Castle Brewery at Næstved, where you have Denmark’s only castle brewery. The brewery, housed in beautiful historic farm buildings from the 1800s, features beer tastings in combination with a recounting of the history of the brewery, the brewing process and the history of beer in general.   

In Næstved itself, you can visit the Kongebryg microbrewery, which is in a former ammunition bunker. Kongebryg, or King’s Brew, is more than a brewery, it’s also one of the town’s most popular venues, where the brewery’s beer can be enjoyed to the sound of hard rock.

The brewery Næstved Bryghus is another of the town’s microbreweries. From time to time, the brewery holds open house events (see the brewery’s website), and also arranges private tours for groups.

From Næstved you can continue the trip to Stege and visit Byghuset Møn, where the beer is made from local ingredients. The same is true of Mjødgård, Mead Farm, in Stevns. Here you have the opportunity to experience the traditional crafts and taste the golden nectar, produced solely from raw materials gathered, picked or harvested in Stevns. Regular open house days are scheduled in the summer season, as well as private mead tastings at unique locations in Stevns. 

Normally you associate wine production with countries in southern climes, but the Danish climate can actually also be used, and in recent years many wineries have popped up around Denmark. You can visit Vesterhavegaarden Vingård in South Zealand, a winery near Karrebæksminde that produces organic wine. There is a farm shop here and the opportunity to go on a tour with wine tasting and tapas, if you fancy that. At Kalvehave is the Danish-French winery Kristianshøj, which makes red, white and dessert wines. Here you can also go on a tour and of course you also have the opportunity to taste the precious drops. If you are near Haslev it is obvious to visit Tuemosegård, which produces their own red wine, white wine, rosé wine, sparkling wines, mead and honey. During the summer you can visit the winery from 13-16, get a tour and visit the farm's own farm shop.

At Isle of Møn Gin, located in Askeby on Western Møn, they produce sustainable gin that, to avoid imports, is made exclusively from berries, herbs, flowers and roots from the wilds of Møn and Nyord.

With their own shop at the covered market Torvehallerne in Copenhagen, Noorbohandelen on the small island of Nyord, north of Møn, is a familiar name to many. They specialise in importing and bottling of some of the world’s finest spirits, but they also have their own production of liqueurs and bitters. As the first place in Denmark, you can buy spirits in bulk here. But this place does not exclusively offer alcoholic beverages, as you will also find specialities from Møn and Nyord on the shelves, as well as arts and crafts. 

If you take a trip to Præstø, you can visit Radius Distillery, which is Denmark’s only estate distillery. In the estate’s charming old manor house you can experience handmade production of spirits, where award-winning gin, whisky and apple brandy are made. The distillery is always filled with new aromas, experimental flavour combinations and bubbling sounds from the copper stills.

Hvert år kan du i Næstved tage til vinfestival, hvor flere lokale vinforhandlere og producenter stiller op på torvet og byder velkommen til en verden af vin. Ellers, kan du tage forbi Præstø, som også holder vinfestival på Café Mocca hvert år. Her kommer vinbønder fra egnen med deres druer, og forhandlere køber det allerbedste hjem fra udlandet.
